The establishment of the Department of Space Communications in the Public Company for Telecommunications (Public Establishment for Telegraph, Post and Telephone) was in 1975.
In 1975, Iraqaccededthe International Telecommunications Satellite Organization (INTELSAT)
In 1976, a ground station was constructed in Al-Dujail town (north of Baghdad) to work with satellites above the Atlantic Ocean (AOR) via Dujail 1 station and above the Indian Ocean(IOR) via Dujail 2 station.
In 1980, Iraq joined the Inter Sputnik through Dujail 3 station.
In 1985, Iraq joined as a shareholder with the Arab Satellite Organization (Arab-Sat).
In 1987, the Iraqi Scientific Research Council established the Space Research Center.
Under the Governmental Executive Order No. 1 of the year 2012, a committee was formed under the chairmanship of the Ministry of Communications and representatives of the Ministries of State (Defense, Interior, Science, Technology and Planning) and the security authorities to oversee the Iraqi satellite project.
In 2013, a common recommendation was issued by the chairman and members of the committee of Governmental ExecutiveOrder of 2012 as well as the chairman and members of the steering committee of Governmental ExecutiveOrder No. 26 of the year 2009 to establish the Iraqi Space Agency (ISA).
